Ask the Heart Expert: Renal Denervation to Reduce Blood Pressure

Uncontrolled high blood pressure is a global health problem. Doctors typically prescribe medication to control blood pressure, but many people don’t take this medication as prescribed.
Renal denervation, an innovative new treatment, may reduce or eliminate a person’s need for blood pressure medication. This minimally invasive procedure removes nerves from the renal artery (which leads to the kidneys).
The heart, kidneys, and brain communicate through nerves to control blood pressure. Overactive signals from these nerves raises blood pressure. Removing the renal nerves reduces the overactive signals, lowering blood pressure.
