A PART OF NURSING PROFESSIONAL EXCELLENCE

Stanford Health Care Center for Education and Professional Development provides advanced professional learning opportunities to all SHC employees and to the surrounding healthcare community. Although the primary target audience is nursing staff at SHC, the CEPD offers educational activities suitable for multidisciplinary healthcare team members. Content areas include clinical practice, research and innovation, leadership, and professional development. In addition to offering educational activities for ANCC continuing nursing education contact hours, the CEPD offers programs with California Board of Registered Nurses continuing education contact hours and coordinates Life Support Training courses for staff and the community.

The Clinical Education team focuses on the orientation/onboarding and competency management for nurses and interdisciplinary colleagues across the continuum of care. Some of the CEPD Clinical Education programs and initiatives include:
The Foundations for Acute and Critical Care program provides on-boarding for the incoming RN who has been hired into one of Stanford Hospital’s Adaptable Acuity Units (AAU). The AAU nursing model serves patients ranging in acuity from acute care med-surg to the intermediate critical care arena and includes ECG dysrhythmia detection. The FACC on-boarding program was initiated to extend the acute care, med-surg nurse’s knowledge base and comfort zone in the AAU range of acuity. The content focus is on advanced respiratory and cardiac concepts and clinical reasoning.
The world of practice changes and process improvement occurs rapidly in the health care delivery environment. At SHC we are innovating our training by providing Just-In-Time Training that supports the learning needs of the end users in real time. Leveraging technology such as QR code and video learning, we can disseminate practice changes and equipment training on mobile devices. Our team collaborates with institutional wide educators in order to conduct needs assessments and create educational plans for implementation and information dissemination.
Stanford Health Care (SHC) is committed to building and sustaining a rich professional practice environment (education philosophy) as a joint responsibility between management and staff.
An expression of institutional commitment to professional knowledge development is evidenced by the range of opportunities SHC provides for nurses to achieve advanced education, certifications, continuing education, and skill development and maintenance.
SHC is committed to ensuring that all levels of caregivers are provided with competency-based orientation and ongoing education that promotes clinical and professional advancement.
The Professional Development team focuses on continuing education, professional role development, and collaborative partnerships for nurses and interdisciplinary colleagues across the continuum of care. Some of the current CEPD Professional Development programs and initiatives offered to SHC staff include:
The charge nurse is a pivotal member of a health care team and organization. Charge nurses have many roles and responsibilities that ensure patients are receiving the appropriate care and microsystems are meeting regulatory guidelines. The Charge Nurse Leadership Development Workshop will help to clarify the roles and responsibilities of a charge nurse that are applicable to the inpatient and outpatient setting. The class will also identify and discuss standard work, and provide communication and feedback strategies. Stanford Health Care is dedicated in the development and success of nurse leaders. This course will provide new and experienced charge nurses the tools to be successful in the role.
This program is only offered to SHC staff.
The Leadership and Management Academy (LAMA) is a structured leadership development program tailored toward new interprofessional, mid-level leaders. LAMA is designed to facilitate role transition, build peer networks for future support, and standardize leader training across disciplines. It’s a ten-day program, spaced out over several months. A variety of teaching and learning methodologies are incorporated into the program and include guest speakers, group activities, and individualized work. LAMA incorporates a quality improvement project specific to each leader’s developmental goals supported by the curriculum and guidance of the instructors.
This program is only offered to SHC staff.
Stanford Health Care is committed to creating a supportive workplace and provide role clarity with clear expectations of the preceptor role and responsibilities. Learn more about the role and responsibilities by attending the half-day online Preceptor Development Workshop course. During this course, the Professional Practice module will serve as an overarching framework for discussion topics that include adult learning theories, teaching strategies, communication and feedback strategies, socialization and transition for a successful preceptor/preceptee relationship.
This program is only offered to SHC staff.
The Professional Nurse Development Program (PNDP) is a sweeping innovation for nursing staff at Stanford Health Care, transforming the original nursing ladder program that was implemented in the early 1970s.
Stanford Health Care strives to recognize and reward exemplary care delivery, patient advocacy and improvements in patient outcomes as evidenced through professional nursing practice.
A professional development ladder sets nurses on an intentional path towards performing to the full extent of their scope of practice, and beyond. It challenges nurses to strive for the highest levels of nursing practice.
This program is only offered to SHC staff.
The Center for Education and Professional Development (CEPD) is committed to helping professionals in their pursuit of lifelong learning. In alignment with Stanford Health Care (SHC) mission (To care, to educate and to discover), we proudly provide opportunities for personal and professional growth of students from SHC academic partners.
