We treat people of all ages in the Stanford Health Care Tri-Valley emergency department. Our intensive care unit (ICU) team has extensive experience caring for people who are critically ill. We use sophisticated technology to deliver the highest quality care to our most fragile patients.
If you need a higher level of care, we coordinate your care with the Level I Trauma Center at nearby Stanford. For children with complex conditions, we provide advanced care through our partnership with the pediatric emergency department at Stanford Children’s Health.

Emergency Care
Urgent Care
When to Call 911
If you or your loved one has a condition that can lead to severe harm or death if left untreated, you should go to the emergency room immediately. Conditions we treat in the ER include:
Pain and illness
- Chest pain or pressure
- Difficulty breathing and shortness of breath
- Sudden weakness or inability to walk, talk, see, or move
- Abdominal pain or severe nausea and vomiting
- Infections and sepsis
- Severe allergic reactions
- Seizure
Trauma, Accidents, and Injuries
- Trauma to the head, neck, or back
- Moderate to severe burns
- Broken bones, especially if the area is numb
- Poisoning or overdose
- Severe bleeding
- Loss of consciousness
- Injury from a traffic accident, fall, or other trauma
If you or your loved one has a medical problem that’s not life-threatening and you need care right away, our Urgent Care team can help. Our two convenient Urgent Care locations are open days, evenings, weekends, and holidays. Conditions we treat in Urgent Care include:
Illness
- Respiratory infections
- Flu and fever
- Rashes
- Ear infections
- Cough and sore throat
- Pink eye and other minor eye problems
Accidents and Injuries
- Minor burns
- Sprains and strains
- Cuts and minor wounds
- Animal and insect bites
Call 911 right away if you are having a life-threatening medical emergency and cannot get yourself to the emergency department. Every minute counts, and EMTs can start delivering life-saving treatments in an ambulance on the way to the hospital.
You should call 911 if you are:
- Having trouble walking, talking, or seeing, or if one side of your face is drooping
- Finding it difficult to breathe
- Experiencing chest pain or pressure
- Unable to transport yourself or your loved one to the ER safely

Our emergency team is specially trained to respond quickly and efficiently. As a certified primary stroke center, we use the latest technology to rapidly diagnose stroke and determine the most appropriate plan. Our stroke response team delivers targeted treatments that save lives.
We collaborate with specialists from radiology, surgery, cardiology, infectious disease, maternity, pediatrics, and orthopaedics to deliver tailored treatments.

Stanford Health Care Tri-Valley Medical Center is a designated Mission: Lifeline® (STEMI) Heart Attack Receiving Center and Cardiac Arrest Receiving Center for Alameda County. These outstanding distinctions indicate that we use advanced technology and we’re uniquely qualified to manage cardiac emergencies such as severe heart attack and cardiac arrest.
In our sophisticated cardiac catheterization lab, we use a special balloon to open coronary artery blockages in people who are having a heart attack. Our team consistently achieves some of the fastest “door-to-balloon” times in the nation.

ER doctors have expertise in all treatments for trauma and severe illness, including stroke care and advanced cardiac life support.

These doctors use images from X-rays, computed tomography (CT) scans, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans, ultrasound, and other imaging techniques to diagnose a range of disease and injuries.
