Stanford Health Care Emergency Services offers a full range of emergency and trauma care, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year for patients of all ages.
The Emergency Services team care for an average of 230 patients each day, providing compassionate and state-of-the-art emergency care with access to all types of sub-specialists day and night. The medical and nursing staff is committed to providing patients with the best care possible.
The Emergency Department is a Level 1 Adult Trauma Center and a Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center. It houses a full-service Pediatric Emergency Department, a Joint Commission Certified Comprehensive Stroke Center, and STEMI receiving center. In addition, the medical and nursing staff manage operations of a 23-hour observation unit called the Clinical Decision Unit (CDU).
Stanford Emergency Services nurses were awarded the prestigious Lantern Award from the Emergency Nurses Association. The ENA Lantern Award recognizes emergency departments that demonstrate exceptional and innovative performance in leadership, practice, education, advocacy and research. Additionally, the Adult ED was one of the first to receive a level III Geriatric Accreditation which acknowledges the well-coordinated, quality care we provide to our geriatric patients.
The Stanford Emergency Services department are a Joint Commission certified Comprehensive Stroke Center, Comprehensive Cardiac Center and Certified Ventricular Assist Device.

Who We Are
The Marc & Laura Andreesen Emergency Department at Stanford Health Care offers a full range of emergency and trauma care, 24 hours a day, for patients of all ages.
The Adult Emergency Department has 66 beds, the Pediatric Emergency Department has 17 beds and the Clinical Decision Area has 11 beds.
The number of certified nurses in the Emergency Department:
- Certified Emergency Nurses 48
- Certified Pediatric Emergency Nurses 11
- Trauma Certified Registered Nurses 20
- Certified Critical Care Nurse 10
- Certified Neuroscience Registered Nurse 2
The team also consists of Adult and Pediatric Emergency Critical Care Nurses. They function as a resource for all critically ill patients in the ED. Their role is a mixture of hands on patient care, staff education, and acting as a liaison between the ICU team, ED physicians, ED charge nurse, hospital nursing supervisor and the bedside ED nurse.
The Emergency department is supported by a dedicated team of Patient Access Representatives, Emergency Department Technicians, and Unit Secretaries, Social Workers, Case Managers, and Child Life Specialists.

The CDU is an emergency medicine observation unit where patients that are not well enough for immediate discharge but not sick enough to warrant full inpatient admission are treated for up to 24 hours. This unit is managed by advanced practice providers (PAs/NPs) and nurses with oversight from emergency department physicians.
