Friends of Nursing Scholarship & Grants
A PART OF NURSING EXCELLENCE
Founded in 1981, this philanthropic organization raises funds and provides financial assistance to support nursing scholarships promoting "Exemplary Professional Practice" and "Transformational Leadership."
FON also awards nursing grants for Evidence Based Practice projects and educational initiatives for "Structural Empowerment". Friends of Nursing also oversees the distribution of the Professional Organization Scholarships (formally known as the Betty Cretekos Scholarship, which was founded in 2004).

Application Process
Applications are submitted electronically online. Links to the online form can be found at the Friends of Nursing website located on Stanford Health Care Intranet SHC Connect. The application period is open twice a year. Deadlines for applications are April 15th and November 15th. Notifications of recipients of the scholarship and grants are on April 30th and November 30th.
The reviewers will have a representative from the SHC Center for Clinical Affairs (Nursing Excellence, Research, Education and Professional Practice/Quality) and no less than one clinical nurse employed by Stanford Health Care.

Note: Anyone looking for funding for Nursing Research Study proposals requiring IRB approval should look into the Stanford Nursing Alumni Legacy Grant.
Eligibility Criteria for Friends of Nursing Grant & Scholarships
- Stanford Health Care employee for at least two years, in good standing.
- At least 0.75-time commitment
- Specific Plan to bring back information to Stanford
- 2 Letters of Support: a Patient Care Services Manager or Clinical Manager, and a professional peer or colleague to whom the nurse applicant directly and currently works with
The application will be submitted electronically through the intranet SHC Connect. The application form has questionnaires and/or additional requirements specific to the applicant’s pillar of excellence focus - See example and refer to Article IV Application Process e.g. Exemplary Professional Practice: Participation in Professional Organizations (for National Conference presentation/attendance: written proposal on how the applicant intends to bring back the information to Stanford Health Care).
