PGY-2 Oncology Program

Program Overview

Stanford Health Care (SHC) is world-renowned for advanced patient care, particularly for the treatment of cancer. SHC is recognized by U.S. News & World Report as one of "America's Best Hospitals," currently on the Best Hospitals Honor Roll for the ninth year in a row and ranked #11 as the Best Hospitals for Cancer. Stanford Cancer Institute has been a National Cancer Institute (NCI) Designated Cancer Center since 2007 and is a National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) founding member. Annually, there are over 700 accruals to interventional clinical trials and over 250 actively recruiting clinical trials to pioneer new preventative, diagnostic, and treatment strategies.

The Oncology Residency at SHC is a 12-month PGY2 specialty training program that offers extensive hematology and oncology experiences at Stanford Comprehensive Cancer Center. Two applicants are accepted per year.

The program is designed to transition PGY1 residency graduates from general practice to specialized practice focused on the care of patients with oncologic and hematologic disorders. Residency graduates will be equipped to participate as integral members of interdisciplinary teams, assuming full responsibility for optimizing patient care as an oncology pharmacist.

Throughout the program, residents gain practical experience in the management of malignancies as well as cancer-related and cancer treatment-related disorders. In light of the prominent use of investigational drugs in the treatment of cancer, residents acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to practice effectively in clinical research environments. Residents also manage the preparation, distribution, and disposal of hazardous medications in both inpatient and ambulatory settings. Other experiences include oncology administration and leadership, formulary management, teaching and precepting, and research.

Program Mission

The mission of the PGY2 Oncology Residency Program is to provide a broad experience-based foundation in hematology/oncology, develop clinical skills and knowledge in evidence-based medicine, and prepare for a comprehensive practice in hematology/oncology in clinical, administrative, research, and/or academic settings. Upon completion of the residency program, the resident will:

  1. Provide optimal clinical care to patients with oncologic and hematologic disorders
  2. Function independently as an effective member of the health care team
  3. Educate health care professionals, students, patients, and the community about effective and safe medication use
  4. Establish a practice change based on a completed research project
  5. Develop excellent written and verbal communication skills
  6. Demonstrate time management and problem-solving skills
  7. Become a leader within the pharmacy profession 

Program Structure

The PGY2 Oncology Specialty Residency is accredited by the American Society of Health System Pharmacists (ASHP). The program follows goals and learning objectives are consistent with standards developed by ASHP.

Required Rotations

  • Orientation and Training (1-2 weeks)
  • Inpatient Hematology/Oncology (4 weeks)
  • Inpatient Malignant Hematology (4-6 weeks)
  • Inpatient Medical Oncology (4-6 weeks)
  • Inpatient Blood and Marrow Transplantation (BMT) and Cellular Therapy (4-5 weeks)
  • Outpatient Hematology/Oncology/BMT Clinics (12 weeks, divided into 2 blocks)
  • Investigational Drug Services (4 weeks)
  • Oncology Administration (4 weeks)

Elective Rotations
(12 weeks) (2-3 rotations, 2-4 weeks each)

  • Inpatient Pediatric Hematology/Oncology/BMT*
  • Off-site Hematology/Oncology/BMT Services*
  • Inpatient Infectious Diseases

*In general, a maximum of one off-site rotation is permitted

 

Longitudinal Experiences

  • Outpatient Hematology/Oncology/BMT Clinics
  • Independent research project presented at a national conference
  • Residency research seminars
  • Active participation in interdisciplinary patient care rounds
  • Comprehensive patient care, including patient counseling and education
  • Expansion of clinical pharmacist roles and initiation of a new oncology pharmacy-related service
  • Education to pharmacy, medical, and nursing staff as well as PGY1 pharmacy residents and students
  • Administration projects in the hematology/oncology setting, such as monograph, policy, protocol, and guideline preparation and presentation
  • Hematology/oncology medication use evaluation presented to P&T Committee
  • Hematology/oncology related committee meetings
  • Teaching experiences, including didactic and precepting opportunities
  • Journal club and forum presentations, including a CAPE-accredited CE and a clinical debate
  • Chemotherapy preparation and dispensing
  • Staffing 16 hours every 3 weeks in the inpatient hematology/oncology/BMT pharmacy satellites and outpatient infusion treatment area

Compensation and Benefits

PGY-2 residents receive a competitive annual stipend of approximately $81,000 with full benefits, including an excellent health care benefits package and 10 days paid time off (PTO). In addition, the PGY-2 resident will enjoy educational leave and a stipend to attend and participate at various pharmacy conferences throughout the year.

Eligibility

  • Completion of Doctor of Pharmacy degree from an ACPE-accredited school or college of pharmacy
  • Completion of an ASHP-accredited PGY1 residency program
  • Interview at Stanford Health Care (on-site or virtual depending on the pandemic situation)
  • Licensure to practice pharmacy in the state of California prior to October 1

Current Resident

Eugene Generoso, Pharm.D.

Eugene received his Bachelor of Science in Pharmaceutical Sciences from the University of California, Irvine and Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the USC Alfred E. Mann School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences. He completed his PGY-1 pharmacy practice residency at Stanford Health Care. His professional interests include bone marrow transplant, hematologic malignancies, targeted and immunotherapy, and leadership. In his free time, Eugene enjoys eating shabu, trying local breweries, traveling, and snowboarding.



 

Richard Shin, Pharm.D.

Richard received his Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and Doctor of Pharmacy at University of Illinois Chicago. As an APPE student, he completed his clinical rotations at Rush University Medical Center, UI Health, Jesse Brown VA Medical Center, and The University of Chicago Medical Center. He then completed his PGY1 Acute Care Pharmacy Residency at Stanford Health Care. His professional interests include hematology, oncology, targeted therapy, solid organ transplantation, infectious diseases, and critical care. In his free time, Richard enjoys biking, working out, playing tennis, hiking, traveling, and exploring the Bay Area.
