Message from the Chair, Stanford University School of Medicine – Orthopaedic Surgery
I am excited to share the latest news and innovations from Stanford Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine.
This issue features innovations in annular closure as well as advancements in hip arthroscopy. We will take a look at the latest clinical research on the use of platelet-rich plasma for knee osteoarthritis. We'll also share a new look at total ankle replacement and bunion surgery, and the latest on suture button suspensionplasty (SBS) as a game changer for thumb arthritis.
I’d also recommend reviewing the Spine Care Landmark Reading List from the North American Spine Society (NASS). The reading list includes 19 surgical and 20 medical spine care articles that NASS deems essential to the education of residents and fellows in orthopaedic surgery, neurosurgery, physiatry, anesthesia, and pain management.
I hope you find these articles of interest, and I encourage you to sign up to receive future colleague communications.
Lastly, I would like to personally congratulate Serena Hu, MD as the president of the American Orthopaedic Association (AOA) and on her upcoming appointment as president elect of the Scoliosis Research Society in September. Dr. Hu serves as the first female president for both organizations. Dr. Hu is a Stanford Medicine professor and the chief of spine for the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery.
Respectfully,
Professor, Orthopaedic Surgery
Chair, Stanford University School of Medicine - Orthopaedic Surgery
Second Vice President, The Knee Society
Reduced Risk of Lumbar Disc Reherniation with Annular Closure Device
The Stanford Medicine Spine Center is a leader in treating patients with lumbar disc herniation (LDH).
Orthopaedic spine surgeons have adopted the use of an innovative annular closure device (ACD) for patients with large annular tears. The ACD implant minimizes the risk of recurrence and reoperation, while also lessening tissue loss and preserving disc height.

Outpatient and Minimally Invasive Surgeries (MIS) Bring Relief to Foot and Ankle Patients
Stanford Medicine orthopaedic surgeons are setting the pace for innovation with a pioneering approach to outpatient total ankle replacement and minimally invasive bunion surgery.
We believe in a conservative approach to surgery, with debilitating pain being the primary indication.

Outpatient Suture Button Suspensionplasty (SBS) Procedure for Thumb Arthritis Shortens Recovery Time
The team at Stanford Health Care pioneered an advanced outpatient technique for thumb arthritis surgery. Known as suture button suspensionplasty, this procedure is especially notable for its shortened recovery period.
Patients are in a splint for only five days before beginning hand therapy. Most are back to normal functioning within three months, thanks to an innovative and durable implant.
