PGY-2 Health-System Pharmacy Administration and Leadership Program
Program Overview
The PGY-2 Health-System Pharmacy Administration and Leadership (HSPAL) Residency Program at Stanford Health Care (SHC) provides a foundational learning experience for developing a pharmacy leader capable of executing positive change across a health care system. The SHC enterprise includes an academic medical hospital, along with more than 60 clinics and centers throughout the Bay Area. This expansive health system provides abundant opportunities for diverse learning experiences to our administrative resident. After completion of this program, the PGY-2 HSPAL resident will have gained exposure to the areas of safety and medication use systems, quality assurance, human resource management, financial resource management, use of innovative informatics and technology, and advanced leadership.

Program Mission
The mission of the PGY-2 HSPAL Residency Program is to build upon PGY1 residency graduates’ competence in the delivery of patient-centered care and in pharmacy operational services to prepare residents who can assume high level managerial, supervisory, and leadership responsibilities. This program provides the resident with challenging learning experiences and training in diverse areas of pharmacy practice to prepare them to become a competent and contributing leader within the profession. Upon completion of the residency program, the resident will:
- Develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills in a fast-pace, dynamic work environment
- Function as an integral part of the pharmacy and hospital leadership team
- Educate health care professionals, students, patients, and the community
- Ensure appropriate medication use and safety through policy development
- Practice and refine skills of strategic planning, project management, financial strength, and quality assurance
- Enhance skills in written and verbal communication, time management, and problem solving
- Advocate for advancement of pharmacy practice within the organization
Program Structure
The Health-System Pharmacy Administration and Leadership Specialty Residency is accredited by the American Society of Health System Pharmacists (ASHP). One applicant is accepted per year.
Required Rotations
- Orientation/Training (2 weeks)
- Executive Pharmacy Leadership (4 weeks, may be split into separate weeks throughout the year)
- Pharmacy Quality & Regulatory Compliance (8 weeks)
- Inpatient Operations (8 weeks)
- Ambulatory Operations (8 weeks)
- Business Operations & Supply Chain Management (4 weeks)
- Finance & Budgeting (4 weeks)
Elective Rotations
- Cancer Network (4 weeks)
- Executive Health-System Leadership (4 weeks)
- External SHC Facilities (SHC Valley Care/Childrens) (4 weeks)
- Informatics (4 weeks)
- Investigational Drug Services Operations (4 weeks)
- Specialty Pharmacy Operations (4 weeks)
Longitudinal Experiences
- Human Resources & Recruitment
- Shadow Admin-on-Call (AOC)
- Active participation within pharmacy and hospital leadership teams
- Preparation of presentations for various health system committees
- Attendance at relevant professional conferences
- Conduct a longitudinal health-system administrative research project and present at the Western States Conference and/or other professional conferences
- Participate in teaching activities with PGY-1 residents and pharmacy students
- Teaching certificate program (optional)
- Staff a minimum of 16 hours a month
- Staff a clinical/operational shift every 3rd weekend
Compensation and Benefits
The resident will receive a competitive annual stipend of approximately $81,000 with full benefits, including an excellent health care benefits package and 10 days of paid time off (PTO). In addition, the resident will receive educational leave and a stipend to attend and participate in various pharmacy conferences such as the ASHP Conference for Pharmacy Leaders in October, ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting in December, and the Western States Residency meeting in May, in San Diego, California.
Eligibility
- Completion of Doctor of Pharmacy degree from an ACPE-accredited school or college of pharmacy
- Completion of an ASHP-accredited PGY-1 residency program
- Participate in an on-site and/or virtual interview at Stanford Health Care
- Obtain licensure to practice pharmacy in the state of California before October 1st

2022 Resident
Kevin Doan, Pharm.D., BCPS
Kevin received his Bachelor of Science in Neuroscience from Christopher Newport University and Doctor of Pharmacy from Virginia Commonwealth University. He completed his acute care PGY-1 pharmacy practice residency within RWJ Barnabas Health. His professional interests include strategic planning, finance, and controlled substance diversion. In his free time, Kevin enjoys hiking, going to the beach, and riding his bike.
