Treatments
Hand therapy
Hand therapists evaluate and treat patients to improve hand and/or upper extremity function.
Treatment focuses on:
- Splinting
- Hand function and coordination
- Joint and soft tissue mobilization
- Therapeutic exercise
- Edema management
- Pain management
Occupational therapy
Occupational therapists evaluate and treat patients to improve functioning in daily life activities.
Treatment focuses on:
- Activities of daily living (ADLs)
- Upper extremity function
- Swallow/dysphagia/self-feeding
- Functional mobility training
- Therapeutic positioning
- Equipment prescription (wheelchair, commode and adaptive aids)
- Splinting
- Energy conservation/work simplification
- Visual-perceptual screening/training
Physical therapy
Physical therapists evaluate and treat patients to improve their strength, flexibility, coordination, balance and mobility skills.
Treatment focuses on:
- Spine and extremity rehabilitation
- Sports rehabilitation
- Joint and soft tissue mobilization
- Functional mobility training
- Gait and balance training
- Neuromuscular re-education
- Therapeutic exercise
- Aerobic conditioning
- Pain evaluation and treatment
- Equipment prescription (ambulation devices and orthoses)
Speech-language pathology
Speech-language pathologists evaluate and treat patients to improve communication, cognition and swallowing.
Treatment focuses on:
- Communication retraining for aphasia, dysarthria, dysphonia or head/neck trauma
- Cognitive retraining
- Augmentative communication devices
- Trach weaning protocols/Passy–Muir speaking valves
- Swallow/dysphagia evaluation and treatment
- Instrumental swallow assessment (videofluoroscopy, FEES, FEEST)
- Post-laryngectomy communication options
All rehabilitation therapies require a physician's prescription. If you or someone you know might benefit from our services, contact your physician for a referral.
Clinical Trials
Clinical trials are research studies that evaluate a new medical approach, device, drug, or other treatment. As a Stanford Health Care patient, you may have access to the latest, advanced clinical trials.
Open trials refer to studies currently accepting participants. Closed trials are not currently enrolling, but may open in the future.
For Patients
Rehabilitation therapy appointments can be requested through a doctor referral. Please ask your medical provider for a therapy prescription.
PREPARE FOR YOUR APPOINTMENT
- Review the New Patient Letter and Video Swallow Study Patient Letter (if applicable)
- Wear comfortable clothing and plan to arrive 15 minutes before your evaluation appointment
- Bring your insurance card and photo identification
- Bring your insurance authorization letter (if required)
- Bring the following forms (if applicable)
