A partnership between Stanford Health Care and Stanford Medicine Children’s Health
Sustainability and Health Care
Human and environmental health are inextricably linked. Our changing climate impacts human health, disrupts the supply of food and water, and contributes to hospital admissions and emergency room visits across the country and around the world.
As a significant source of the carbon emissions that scientists say play a key role in our changing climate, the health care sector has a responsibility to take action. Health care emits an estimated 8.5% of all US greenhouse gas emissions1.
As a health care provider, Stanford Medicine is committed to promoting the health and well-being of the people and communities we serve. That’s why we are increasing the sustainability of our operations, including a reduction in our greenhouse gas emissions.
“We must act quickly on climate. ... Our response to the pandemic has shown we can move quickly.”
— David Entwistle, President & CEO, Stanford Health Care
“As part of our mission to improve global human health, Stanford Medicine’s health care delivery system is also committed to sustaining the health of our planet.”
— Lloyd Minor, MD, Dean, Stanford School of Medicine
“Healthy people need a healthy planet: The link between climate and health is increasingly clear, and our organization is committed to reducing our own impact on climate and helping our community to prepare for climate impacts.”
— Paul King, President & CEO, Stanford Medicine Children’s Health
