A partnership between Stanford Health Care and Stanford Medicine Children’s Health
Workgroups
To ensure that Stanford Medicine’s goals are vigorously pursued, cross-disciplinary work groups were formed in 2021. Each work group is charged with enacting solutions that address the workgroup’s goals, as summarized below:
Energy, Emissions & Water
The Energy, Emissions & Water Workgroup focuses on programming for all three scopes, whether it’s the elimination of natural gas on campus, reduction of waste anesthetic gases (Scope 1), reducing emissions of our purchased energy (Scope 2), or the purchase of supplied fuels (Scope 3). Members of this workgroup include Facilities & Engineering staff as well as other stakeholders connected to Stanford Health Cares energy sources such as Stanford University and Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital.
Multi-Year Target: Achieve carbon neutrality in Scopes 1 and 2 by 2025 on the Palo Alto Main Campus.
Lead:
Saadat Khan, Energy Engineer, Sustainability Program Office, Stanford Health Care
Transportation
The Transportation Workgroup focuses on the strategy and implementation of sustainable transportation projects. Tackling the decisions staff, patients, and visitors make regarding their mode of travel to the main campus is challenging. However, this cross-functional workgroup makes alternative transportation options accessible and incentivizes staff by offering several programs free of charge.
Multi-Year Target: Achieve carbon neutral transportation by 2025 in Scopes 1 and 2 for staff, patients, and fleet vehicles coming to and from the Palo Alto Main Campus.
Lead:
Eun-Soo Lim, Sr. Program Manager, Sustainability Program Office, Stanford Health Care
Zero Waste
The Zero Waste Workgroup develops the education, standards, best practices, and programs to improve sorting behaviors and to minimize waste to landfill. The strategy focuses on continuous sort quality improvement coupled with waste prevention initiatives. While the target of zero waste to landfill focuses on Main Campus buildings, the workgroup is building partnerships, capacity, and programs that span the Enterprise. Because of the complexity of infrastructure, members of this workgroup include Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital and Stanford University.
Multi-Year Target: Achieve more than 90% reduction of waste to landfill at Main Campus by 2025.
Lead:
Erika Kimball, Sustainability Consultant, Stanford Health Care
Sustainable Procurement
The Sustainable Procurement workgroup develops the Sustainable Procurement Program to measure and manage the upstream greenhouse gas, waste generation, and hazardous chemicals impact of Stanford Medicine’s supply chain. Purchased Goods & Services is the largest contributor to the Stanford Health Care greenhouse gas inventory and it is a very complex problem to solve. Senior members of supply chain, sustainability, and several other departments within Stanford Medicine, along with Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital, contribute to this complex and undefined landscape.
Multi-Year Target: Establish a Sustainable Procurement Program in 2023. Longer term goals to follow.
Lead:
Rachel Gibson, Sustainability Consultant, Stanford Health Care
Design & Construction
The Sustainable Design & Construction workgroup develops Stanford Health Care’s Green Building Standard, Sustainability-focused Interiors Standards, and Sustainable Landscape Design Guidelines. Establishing Stanford Health Cares first set of sustainability construction standards requires strong collaboration primarily between the construction team and the operations team, along with guidance and support of the sustainability team.
Multi-Year Target: Establish sustainable landscaping guidelines, sustainable construction guidelines, and select a sustainable building standard in 2023.
Leads:
Saadat Khan, Energy Engineer, Sustainability Program Office, Stanford Health Care
Molly Swenson, Senior Program Manager, Planning, Design & Construction, Stanford Health Care
